Anyone have a favorite site for futures charts, including single-stock futures?

I've been using barchart.com but am not a huge fan of it so far ;)

Thanks!

Hi Adrian and ALL,
I subscribed to barrons.com online version which is also wallstreet journal online.
I set up email alerts for some news from there.
Faster than reading it online.
Maybe you can find a better solution there.
I dont really play futures.
I know a friend who worked for free for 3 years making NOT one dime and now is one of the top commodities brokers.
But, I wouldnt recommend commodities unless you have got several million to risk.
More risk = high return
Low risk-Low return
None the less, always risk.
Hope this directs someone on the network.

Kindest regards,
Paul

Having a plan is key, one that includes risk management.

To look at things another way, hopefully someone with several million to risk would not fully risk it ;)

The plan should include risk per trade (e.g. 1-2%) as part of its definitions and systems.

The 20x-ish leverage and liquidity of futures requires a trading plan (w/ backtesting etc.). Trading at that kind of leverage without a risk management plan is like buying real estate with a 95% mortgage... ok, sorry, bad joke! ;)

Thanks for the post and the suggestions,

-a

I also used cybertrader pro from schwab for 12 years.
Nice software for level two quotes.

Retail version is streetsmartpro
same thing.

with schwab.

Dont think fidelity or td waterhouse has anything like it.

what do you use to trade?

Kindest regards,
Paul

Adrian,

Reading from your comments on Trading Plan and Risk Management it appears to me that you are also an active trader. How do you find the time to engage the markets in addition to your duty at Ryze?

I have been trading for over 4 years, mainly daytrading the index futures. For awhile also trading the electronic gold and oil contracts, but didn't find it worthwhile. I use a charting (and trading platform) software calls TradeStation. It is considered one of the best in the field, I believed.

My day trading is fully automated. Before trading a system I backtested with enough data. I trade a mix of systems for diversification, coupled with a risk management plan (risk per trade, risk per system, risk per day), resizing the contracts up or down based on drawdown.

Thanks for your note, Ron.

That's neat that you use TradeStation. I've used it a little bit, but haven't gotten into it as much as I'd like. (Most of my friends who are traders use it though.)

I am heavily trading much at this time. Overall I am generally a medium term trader, holding positions for several months (talking about non-futures trades primarily).

Have you checked out Trading Blox? They have an interesting approach and setup. I've played around with their software a bit, and it's quite intriguing.

Do you work volatility into your risk per trade etc calcs?

That's excellent that you have put together a fully automated system.

Read any good trading books recently?

Adrian,

Trading Blox looks interesting, though a bit pricey. It has the Monte Carlo simulation which TradeStation lacks.

I think most of the money are made in the longer timeframe (several months on). Due to high leverage in the futures market, I couldn't take the risk of overnight positions. Sometime during the choppy periods of 2004 - 2005 I stopped trading stocks. That was a big mistake, as the energy, commodities, Latin American, emerging market, and China stocks went wild upward (XLE, ILF, EEM, FXI ) soon after. It's always a good idea to diversify trading systems and markets.

I used Avg True Range to volatility adjust stops.

A few books I have read and found to be worthwhile:

Trading in the Zone: Master the Market with Confidence, Discipline and a Winning Attitude by Mark Douglas

Trading Systems That Work: Building and Evaluating Effective Trading Systems by Thomas Stridsman

Professional Stock Trading: System Design and Automation by Mark R. Conway and Aaron N. Behle

Thanks Ron.

Here are a few links to the books he mentioned, in case folks want more info:

Trading in the Zone: Master the Market with Confidence, Discipline and a Winning Attitude by Mark Douglas

Trading Systems That Work: Building and Evaluating Effective Trading Systems by Thomas Stridsman

Thanks for the book mentions. I've gotten a lot out of the Mark Douglas book in years past. I was skeptical of the psychological side of trading when first getting into it, but I grew to appreciate that.

The other two look intriguing, I'll add them to my to-read list.
